Importing cars from Europe
29/10/2010
Buying cars on the continent is no longer the bargain it once was and we’re actually seeing more evidence of the trend being reversed with car buyers in places like Cyprus, Malta and Ireland regularly using our service to buy their next vehicle. Though we still get enquiries from buyers looking to import.
Hi Jonno
I am looking to buy a Lexus RX400h. S E. I have found one advertised as new because it is an import from Europe. The car is being offered by a car dealer. I am told it is right hand drive. Is there anything in particular that I should ask and/or look for in respect of such a car.
Thanks for your help.

Jonno’s response:
Hello John,
Thanks for getting touch. I see you have visited our website too for the Lexus.
The issues of buying an imported car these days are slightly less of a concern, but the there are still certain checks that should be made before purchasing (in no order of importance).
1. Warranty. Check with Lexus as this can vary with each manufacturer. It may be less comprehensive.
2. Ensure all relevant import paperwork and certificate is there.
3. Check with your insurance company, and ensure that they are aware it is an import.
4. Parts compatible? This used to be an issue many years back- but is still worth asking the question.
5. If a car is over 3 years old it will need inspecting and MOT. In some cases DVLA may need to inspect the vehicle to meet our specifications.
6. With any import always ensure headlamps are correct – dipping and pointing right direction etc.
7. Is it MPH and not KPH? All UK vehicles need to be in MPH.
8. As with all cars carry out an HPI check to see the history.
Also bear in mind the re-sale value when you come to sell in the future. As an import it is likely that you will receive less than if it were a UK car comparably .
I hope this has helped and please get back in touch if I can help with anything else.
Kind regards
